Recycling InformationGeneral preparation prior to recycling batteries:
AlkalineAlkaline batteries that are manufactured with a "mercury-free" formula and are safe for disposal in the municipal waste stream. EXCEPTIONS: Minnesota - Hennipen County only, - consumers and non-consumers must dispose of these batteries as a hazardous waste. BR and CR LithiumSafe for disposal in the municipal waste stream. Non-consumers should first fully discharge the battery prior to disposal. Lithium-IonSafe for disposal in the municipal waste stream. Ni-Cad BatteriesNickel-cadmium batteries are classified as a D006 (cadmium) hazardous waste. These batteries can be recycled through a local household hazardous waste disposal program or through the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, Charge Up to Recycle!, national battery collection program (www.rbrc.com). Call 1-800-8BATTERY for assistance in recycling. Ni-MH BatteriesSafe for disposal in the municipal waste stream. This battery however is recyclable. If you would like to recycle this battery, call INMETCO at (724) 758-2800. Note: INMETCO also offers recycling services for other battery chemistries. (www.inmetco.com). Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) BatteriesSLA batteries are fully recyclable and should be accepted at any location that accepts common automotive starter batteries. Examples of places that accept these batteries are county or municipal recycling drop-off centers, scrap metal dealers, and retailers who sell automotive replacement lead-acid starter batteries. Silver OxideAll Silver Oxide batteries contain silver and are considered to be a hazardous waste by the federal government. Non-Consumers must dispose of these batteries in full compliance with the hazardous waste rules. Consumers are covered by the Household exemption under RCRA which allows for these batteries to be disposed of into the municipal waste stream. Zinc-Air/Zinc-CarbonSame as Alkaline, including exceptions. |
